Chronic urticaria (CU) is defined as urticaria present continuously or intermittently (present on most days of the week) for at least 6 weeks. Urticaria, more commonly known as hives, is a prevalent disorder that affects between 15 and 25% of the population at some point during their lifetimes. In the last years, urticaria has increasingly attracted notice to clinicians and researchers. However, the pathogenesis is incompletely understood. This review summarizes current guidelines for the management and novel insights in the pathogenesis of urticaria.
